Armed police rushed to a town centre this afternoon after reports of a person spotted with a handgun.

Locals in Cheadle, North Staffordshire, have been warned to stay inside, after police were called to the High Street this afternoon at 4.20pm. 

One witness claimed an individual was spotted with what appeared to be a handgun and was out on the street ‘knocking on windows and doors’, StokeonTrentLive reports. 

Staffordshire Police has deployed specialist officers to the scene in what is an ongoing incident. No further details have been released by the force.

An image showed armed police units and dog teams at the scene, but witnesses now say officers have left the High Street.    

The force have been approached for a comment.
