At a recent event, AR Rahman opened up about spirituality and mental health. The renowned music composer revealed that he had faced suicidal thoughts in his youth, and it was the advice of his late mother, Kareema Begum, that helped him overcome those dark times.
Rahman shared his mother’s wisdom, saying, “When you live for others, and you’re not selfish, there’s a meaning to your life.” He emphasised the importance of selflessness and how it gives meaning to life. Reflecting on his mother’s teachings during tough times, Rahman stressed the significance of actions like composing for others, assisting those in need, and simply offering a smile to someone.
The composer, who had a close bond with his mother until her passing in 2020, explained that living for others and avoiding selfishness brings purpose and hope to life. Despite occasional feelings of having done it all, Rahman expressed that the prospect of extraordinary experiences in the future keeps him going.
Responding to a question about why he doesn’t speak about spirituality more often, Rahman acknowledged the inevitability of dark times in everyone’s life. He highlighted the transient nature of our existence and the uncertainty surrounding our ultimate destination, shaped by individual beliefs and imaginations.

As for his recent and upcoming projects, Rahman’s latest music composition was for the film Pippa, featuring Ishaan Khatter and Mrunal Thakur. He is also set to contribute to several highly anticipated projects, including Ayalaan, Lal Salaam, Maidaan, Chamkila, D50, The Goat Life, Thug Life, and more, showcasing his continued commitment to the world of music and cinema.
