MacBooks moved to Apple’s M-series chip in 2020
Apple has always focused on performance than RAM and other hardware specs for its products and this executive explains the reason.
Apple launched the new M3 silicone with the latest MacBook Pro models that priced well above Rs 1.5 lakh in the market. But many people have questioned the reason for going with 8GB RAM as the base model for these MacBook variants. Usually, Apple doesn’t entertain queries like these but recently, one of the company’s executives not only gave the reason for doing this and how it manages to beat the PC market with its technology innovations.
Apple changed to its in-house M-series silicone in 2020 for the first time, and during its presentation, the company talked about the reason for this change. It was able to change the design of the chip to accommodate the memory (or RAM) which was seen as a big deal back then.
And now, Bob Borchers, vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple, in an interview reiterated that innovation and other efficiency of the M-series chip to talk about the reason for offering 8GB RAM with the new M3 MacBook Pros.
Bob pointed out the change happened, “because of the fact that we have such an efficient use of memory, and we use memory compression, and we have a unified memory architecture.”
He further went on to state that an Apple M3 machine with 8GB RAM is equal to 16GB RAM that you get on other systems, by which he means Windows PCs.
He also claims that Apple is able to use the 8GB RAM more efficiently which makes it ideal for most users. Over the years, Apple has stayed from the specs talk and Bob stresses on the need to look beyond the features and look at the experience it offers. To some extent we can agree with this opinion and for regular users that may sit well.
Having said that, brands will always try to defend these decisions and it is fair to say that Apple sees increasing RAM on Macs as a good money-making option, forcing people, especially the Pros to spend big if they want a powerful-specd MacBook Pro with M3 chipset.
