AR Rahman and Saira Banu announced divorce after being married for 29 years. On November 19, 2024, the ex-couple announced their separation on their respective social media handles. Saira’s lawyer Vandana Shah issued a statement, which noted, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr. AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs. Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time.”

In his post, AR Rahman wrote, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter. #arrsairaabreakup”

Who is Saira Banu?

Saira Banu was born in Kutch, Gujarat, hails from a culturally rich upper-middle-class family. She is involved in social and charitable initiatives and has been a supporter of AR Rahman’s projects.

The couple maintained a private life. They did not disclose details about their family on social media. The ex-couple have three children Khatija, Raheema and Ameen.

The ex-couple tied the knot on March 12, 1995. During an interview, Rahman had revealed that his mother and sister first met Saira at the shrine of the Sufi saint Moti Baba in Chennai. He added, “My mother didn’t know Saira or her family, but since they lived just five houses away from the shrine, they walked over and spoke to her. Everything happened very naturally.”

While they have called it quits, their son AR Ameen, addressed the situation via a social media story. He wrote, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding.”
