Alexei Navalny: Widow urges Russians to protest against Putin on election day

The widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Yulia Navalnaya, has called for an election day protest against President Vladimir Putin.

In a video on YouTube, she said people should form long queues at polling stations on 17 March at midday, as part of the protest.

She also suggested voters should either tear up their ballot paper, or write ‘Navalny’.

Alexei Navalny died suddenly at a Russian penal colony on 16 February. Ms Navalnaya has blamed Mr Putin for his death.

Russia’s presidential election will take place from 15 to 17 March, with Putin widely expected to win a fifth term in office. Most international observers do not believe the election will be free or fair.
