Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor’s relationship was one of the most talked about topics in Bollywood in the past. In 2002, their engagement was announced at Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday with friends and family in attendance. At time, Karisma expressed her love saying, “It feels wonderful to be a part of this family.”
However, their engagement didn’t last that long and in few months, it was called off, leaving fans and the entire film fraternity shocked. The Bachchan and Kapoor families were already connected at that time through Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter, Shweta Bachchan and Raj Kapoor’s grandson, Nikhil Nanda’s marriage. It was during Nikhil and Shweta’s wedding that Abhishek and Karisma’s love blossomed. After five years together, the couple made their relationship official.
However, after Karisma and Abhishek’s engagement was called off, both the families didn’t provide a clear explanation regarding the same. Later on, Jaya Bachchan claimed that Abhishek decided to end the relationship and the family had no say in his decision.
Why Karsima Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan ended their engagement?
However, an old report from Cosmopolitan stated that Karisma’s mother Babita was the main reason in the fallout. After her divorce from Randhir Kapoor, she single-handedly raised her daughters Karisma and Kareena, and was always protective and concerned about their future. According to reports, she was worried about Abhishek’s financial stability and career prospects at that time.
While Karisma was already a leading actress at that time, Abhishek was still making his mark in the industry. Moreover, the Bachchan family was also going through financial difficulties due to struggling production house and over debts. Babita allegedly requested Bachchans to sign an agreement, requesting Amitabh to transfer half of his wealth to Abhishek to ensure her daughter Karisma’s financial security. However, the Bachchan family declined it, and this led to the engagement being called off.
There were other rumours that Karisma was asked to give her acting career after marrying Abhishek and Babita was strictly against it. Despite years of speculations, no clear explanation behind their break up has been revealed.
Later, Abhishek Bachchan married Aishwarya Rai in 2007. The couple has a daughter Aaradhya Bachchan. Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003. Their marriage didn’t last long and the two separated in 2010. Karisma and Sunjay’s divorce was officially announced in 2016, and the custody of their children- daughter Samaira and son Kiaan went to Karisma.
