Suriya’s highly anticipated fantasy-drama Kanguva, directed by Siva and featuring Bobby Deol and Disha Patani, was released in theatres on November 14. However, Sacnilk.com reported slightly lower numbers, estimating the film’s Day 1 gross at Rs 40 crore, with Rs 28.5 crore coming from domestic earnings in India and Rs 11.5 crore from international markets. This still represents a solid start, especially considering the film’s release on a weekday (Thursday).
Producer KE Gnanavel Raja had expressed his lofty ambitions for the film, initially stating that he dreamed of Kanguva reaching Rs 2000 crore worldwide. During a press conference, Gnanavel acknowledged the mixed response but remained optimistic, saying, “I expected the film to make a lot more on its opening day, but whatever we have gotten is still phenomenal. The film performed well despite releasing on a Thursday, and I expect it to become Suriya’s highest-grossing film by Monday.”
Mixed Reviews for Kanguva
While Kanguva garnered attention for its star-studded cast and grand scale, the reviews have been a mixed bag.
