Over-the-top (OTT) platforms have become a major source of entertainment over the past few years. Since their inception, the demand for actors in web series has skyrocketed. OTT has become a space where directors and producers can explore multiple layers of creativity, something that traditional films often lack due to their limited duration. Filmmakers and producers invest heavily in web series, often without fully knowing the potential outcomes. Notably, many web series have budgets surpassing those of big films. When we discuss the most expensive series ever made, even the budgets of “Animal,” “Jawan,” and other major films seem modest by comparison. Can you guess which web series we’re talking about?

India’s most expensive series is…

The series in question is ‘Rudra: The Age of Darkness,’ based on the British show ‘Luther.’ It is the most expensive Indian series ever made for OTT platforms. According to media reports, the budget for the web series was set at ₹200 crore, significantly higher than the typical allocation for web series. A report by the Times of India stated that Ajay Devgn was paid a staggering Rs 125 crore to play the lead role in the series.

Ajay Devgn’s Rudra budget is more than…

Ajay Devgn’s “Rudra: The Age of Darkness” boasts a budget that eclipses many prominent Bollywood films, including Aamir Khan’s ambitious “Lal Singh Chaddha,” which had a budget of Rs 180 crores, and the much-talked-about “Animal” at Rs 100 crores. In fact, even Sunny Deol’s “Gadar 2,” which was produced for just Rs 60 crores, falls short when compared to “Rudra.”

Streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar, ‘Rudra’ sets a new standard for web series production, with its budget surpassing that of ‘Dunki’ at Rs 85 crores and Salman Khan’s ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan,’ which cost Rs 132 crores to make. This Hindi adaptation of the British crime thriller ‘Luther’ features a stellar cast, including Raashi Khanna, Esha Deol, Atul Kulkarni, and Ashish Vidyarthi, alongside Devgn in the lead role. The first season premiered on Hotstar in March 2022, marking a significant moment in Indian web series history.
