SpaceX has once again made history with the launch of Polaris Dawn, the first privately-funded spacewalk mission. This groundbreaking mission took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on September 10, 2024. The mission is led by Jared Isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur and experienced pilot who previously commanded the Inspiration4 mission, the first all-civilian spaceflight. Polaris Dawn’s crew consists of four members: Jared Isaacman, Scott Poteet, Sarah Gillis, and Anna Menon. Scott Poteet, a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, serves as the mission’s pilot. Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, both SpaceX employees, are mission specialists. Gillis is a lead space operations engineer, while Menon is a lead space operations engineer and medical officer. The mission’s primary objective is to conduct the first commercial spacewalk, a significant milestone in the commercialization of space. The crew will don SpaceX’s new extravehicular activity (EVA) suits, designed to provide enhanced mobility and protection in the harsh environment of space. The spacewalk is expected to last approximately five hours, during which the crew will perform various tasks to test the suits and gather data for future missions.
