Demystify discipline – The Economic Times

Discipline is the power that comes from the clarity of mind. This clarity assists us in choosing the right course of action and paves the way for our mental and spiritual evolution. However, the mind, a lover of freedom, often resists discipline. The question then arises: how can we attain the power of discipline, where the mind achieves utmost clarity and vision?

True discipline does not mean forcing ourselves to do something or controlling our actions. The mind may pretend to be disciplined if it is compelled by external stimuli like oaths or punishments. However, the moment such pressures are absent, the mind reverts to its undisciplined state.

So, how can this habitual discipline be achieved? It happens when we connect with our inner being, becoming fully aware of our own selves. This awareness polishes our vision, allowing us to be transparent and see things from the right perspective. Once we gain clarity and awareness, nobody can tell us how to act.

Turning inwards is the key to real discipline. When we cultivate inner awareness, we naturally align with our true selves. The mind is a tool, and if one knows how to use it, it can be incredibly helpful. Conversely, if one does not understand how to harness the mind’s power, it can become a source of suffering. By learning the art of meditation and understanding how the mind operates, we can transform it from a potential source of turmoil into a powerful ally. With a disciplined and clear mind, we navigate life with greater ease, peace and fulfilment.
