Crystal Palace CONFIRM appointment of Oliver Glasner as their new manager on deal until…

Crystal Palace have confirmed the appointment of Oliver Glasner as their new manager to replace Roy Hodgson.

The Eagles have confirmed the arrival of the Austrian coach, who has signed a deal that will last until the end of the 2025-26 season.

He most recently managed Eintracht Frankfurt until the end of the last season – famously guiding them to the Europa League trophy in 2022.

His confirmation comes hours after the Eagles announced that Hodgson, 76, would leave the club.

Glasner told the club’s website: ‘I am very happy to join Crystal Palace F.C. as manager.

‘I am looking forward to working with the talented squad, meeting the club’s supporters and experiencing the Selhurst Park atmosphere I have heard so much about. It has been a pleasure to meet with Steve and Dougie, and I am looking forward to working with them to achieve our goals.’

Chairman Steve Parish added: ‘I’m delighted to welcome Oliver to the club. He has an outstanding record, and we believe he is the right manager to take the club forward at this pivotal stage.

‘Wherever Oliver has gone so far in his managerial journey, success has been quick to follow, and we believe his ambition, as well as his exciting and attacking approach, is the perfect fit for getting the most from our talented young squad in the remainder of this Premier League season and beyond.’

Palace also confirmed that his coaching staff will be confirmed in due course.

Glasner won’t be in the dugout for their clash with Everton this evening, after the club earlier confirmed that Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington will lead the team for their clash at Goodison Park.

The news of his appointment came 80 minutes after the Eagles announced the departure of Hodgson.

Hodgson suffered a health scare at training on Thursday and has been receiving medical attention ever since. However, even before then Glasner had been lined up to replace the 76-year-old.

In an emotional farewell to the Palace fans, Hodgson said: ‘This club is very special and means so much to me and has played a big part in my footballing life.

‘I have fully enjoyed my time here across six seasons, as it has given me the chance to work with top class players and staff doing what I love every day.

‘However, I understand, given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead, and therefore I have taken the decision to step aside so that the club can bring forward their plans for a new manager, as intended for this summer.

‘I would like to thank Steve Parish and his American partners for their support, along with my coaching staff and backroom team who have helped me so much along the way. In particular, a huge thank you to my long-term friend and assistant, Ray Lewington; coaches Dean Kiely and Paddy McCarthy; plus the excellent sports science, video analysis and medical departments.

‘My thanks and respect also to the current squad of players who have been a pleasure to work with – they are a credit to the club and themselves. I am certain that our fans will continue to give their full support to the team for the remainder of this season and beyond.

‘I am confident that the season will finish well and I wish the team every success in the weeks, months and seasons to come.’

Glasner, 49, joins at a time of supporter discontent at Selhurst Park – with the club languishing in 16th place and just five points above the relegation zone.

The mood had  soured among the Eagles faithful in recent weeks, with furious fans unfurling banners blaming ‘wasted potential’ and ‘weak decisions’ after the 5-0 defeat by Arsenal last month

Hodgson narrowly avoided being struck by a missile launched from the Selhurst Park stands earlier this year and afterwards claimed supporters had been ‘spoiled’ by the club in recent years.

This is Palace’s longest continuous run in the top flight in their history, now on to their 11th-straight season following promotion in 2013.

Chairman Steve Parish originally wanted to stick with Hodgson until the summer, but the veteran manager’s position at Selhurst Park had been uncertain for a number of weeks amid a run of just three wins in 19 matches in all competitions.

That was before Hodgson’s health scare during a training session on Thursday.

Steve Cooper, Julen Lopetegui and Kieran McKenna were all high on the club’s list – but Palace decided to go with Glasner.

Glasner’s last role saw him take charge of Eintracht Frankfurt. He led the club to Europa League glory in 2022, and was knocked out at the round of 16 in the Champions League last season against Serie A champions Napoli.
