The Delhi High Court has ordered the filmmakers of the film Jailer to ensure that, beginning September 1, no theatres display the jersey of the IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), as worn by a contract killer in one of the film’s scenes. Justice Prathiba M Singh, who was hearing a case filed by the IPL team, Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, against the filmmakers for using the team’s jersey in a derogatory manner, ruled that the Rajnikanth-release starrer’s on television, satellite, or any OTT platform must include an altered version of the film prior to its release.
It is claimed that the contract killer in the film who wears the jersey makes derogatory and misogynistic remarks about a woman. The IPL team claimed that using their jersey in a negative way without permission could harm their brand’s image and equity.
Following the filing of the suit, the filmmakers and the IPL team reached an agreement in which the filmmakers agreed to change the scenes featuring the team jersey so that it could not be identified as the RCB jersey. This change would entail removing the primary colours and branding elements found on the RCB jersey. Because the film was already released in theatres on August 10, the parties agreed that the change would be implemented in the theatrical version within ten days, or by September 1, 2023.
