On the second day of the autumn-winter 2023-23 Haute Couture season, Couture designer Rami Al Ali unveiled his collection that is inspired by Henri Matisse. You must understand one thing about Al Ali, he doesn’t do anything half way and this collection is no different. With structured tailoring, he has paid homage to the 1940s, specifically to the cut-out era of Matisse’s ‘carving into color’ work. In all the thirty pieces you can see this artistic expression of designer and painter.
Sticking to a jewel tone silhouette the first look was a blush pink with white creation. With a sculpted design on top the sheer skirting flowed and included blush pink designs of people gliding. Mermaid-esque gowns, A-line dresses, jumpsuits, flowing evening gowns, and off-the-shoulder gowns that gracefully move with the woman wearing it, as well as 18th century skirting techniques fill the collection.
To tell the sartorial story of this collection, Al Ali incorporates various textiles from double faced silks, to satin, taffeta, tulles, soft silk muslin, and tweed. Each fabric is used to get the structure of each gown just right, and every look has its own precision, crafted specifically by Al Ali. “Transcending all the features of a signature Rami Al Ali couture design, handwoven embroidery motifs are delicately infused to curate one-of-a-kind creations that are illustrative of Al Ali’s incredible vision,” states the House in note.
Even the bridal gown with its many folds of satin is detailed, distinct, and precise. The most fascinating part, the veil which is connected to the bodice on all sides giving a Medieval sort of feel.
It’s a collection that Al Ali is not afraid to play with volume, shapes, flamboyant shapes, and texture. Crafted with Middle Eastern savoir-faire, it was designed with the highest standards. Oh-so feminine and dreamy, it’s a collection that will make a tomboy dream to wear a gown for one night, as Al Ali has once again created a work of wearable art that is stunningly professional, and stunningly classy.
