BHUBANESWAR: Rakes of a stationary goods train without engine ran over four people killing them on the spot and injured four others at Jajpur Road station on Wednesday evening.
The tragic incident occurred involving a group of labourers who sought shelter beneath the rakes during a sudden rain and thunderstorm. Regrettably, they were unaware of its unexpected movement and got crushed under it.
An official from the East Coast Railway said that for the past few months, a set of rakes without an engine had been stationed on that line. These rakes consist of approximately 30 reserve carriages designated for monsoon emergencies, specifically carrying sand and crushed stone to be used in case of washouts during heavy rains.
Unfortunately, there was a mishap as the rakes unexpectedly rolled down a short distance from their original position probably triggered by a storm, he said.
