Rupert Murdoch’s Wife, Supermodel Jerry Hall, Donates To Joe Biden’s Campaign

Jerry Hall, the supermodel who is married to media scion Rupert Murdoch, gave $500 to Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in May, according to Federal Election Commission filings that came out last week but have not been previously reported.

The donation appeared on the Biden campaign’s latest report filed with the FEC, which includes contributions received from donors in May, and lists “Jerry Murdoch” with an address that matches the one used on her voter registration record. The amount is small, especially for someone who is married to a man with a fortune that Forbes estimates is worth $17.2 billion. But it’s nonetheless notable, given her husband’s stake in Fox News, known for its pro-Trump punditry.

Hall, who appeared on the covers of dozens of magazines in the 1970s, rarely makes political contributions, FEC records show. Her husband, meanwhile, has personally contributed over $500,000 to federal political causes since 1987, according to FEC records, about two thirds of that to Republican campaigns and causes. Most recently he gave $5,600 to Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina in 2019.

In the last year Hall and her adult daughters—Lizzy and Georgia May Jagger, children she had with rock star Mick Jagger—have spoken publicly about their support for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, a cause Biden also supports.

“I was so pleased to see that the [Equal Rights Amendment] has been brought up as a campaign promise in the Democratic debates,” Hall told Harper’s Bazaar in October 2019. “The women’s vote is so important, and our Constitution should include language that protects us from sexual discrimination.”

Biden’s platform includes a promise to fight to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

Hall may have also given $1,000 to Pete Buttigieg’s campaign ahead of Super Tuesday this year. FEC filings list a contribution from a “Jerry Murdoch” received by the Buttigieg campaign on February 19, but other identifying information like an address, employer or occupation details were left blank on the filing. A representative for Hall could not be reached. Representatives for Rupert Murdoch did not respond to requests for comment. Rupert Murdoch’s son James was an early donor to Pete Buttigieg’s campaign in 2019, giving the former South Bend, Indiana mayor $2,800 in March 2019.
